Deported Mexican boxer back in Hermosillo gym as he awaits trial

A well-known Mexican boxer is back in the gym after being deported to a prison outside Hermosillo as he awaits trial for alleged ties to the Sinaloa cartel.

A boxing gym in Hermosillo posted a video of Julio César Chávez Jr. training there, just days after his release from prison.

Chávez was deported from Los Angeles last month. After a prison stay outside of Hermosillo, a judge in the Sonoran capital decided to let the boxer free as he awaits trial.

Chávez is accused of arms trafficking related charges, and is allegedly associated with the Sinaloa cartel, one of the Mexican criminal organizations the Trump administration earlier this year designated as a terrorist organization.

Chávez’s father, who shares his name, is one of his country’s most legendary boxers and a multiple-time world champion.
