Mexico suspends postal shipments to the U.S. ahead of new tariff

Mexico says it’s suspending postal shipments to the United States in response to a new tariff on low-cost goods.

The country’s postal service has stopped all shipments to the U.S. temporarily as it works out a new system to respond to a Trump administration tariff.

Starting Friday, the United States is getting rid of a tariff exemption for shipments under $800, known as the “de minimis” exemption.

Mexico’s decision to pause post to the U.S. follows similar decisions from other countries, including Australia, Japan and several European countries.

According to Customs and Border Protection, more than a billion packages were sent to the United States under the de minimis exemption last year.
