The FBI has returned a manuscript signed by Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés to Mexico.

The document is nearly five centuries old and details an accounting of the logistics of the Spanish conquistador’s journey through Mexico, which led to the fall of the Aztec empire.

Authorities believe 15 pages of the manuscript were stolen from Mexico’s national archives in the 1980s or 1990s. Last year, Mexico asked for the FBI’s Art Crime team’s help locating the page with Cortés’ signature.

The FBI says in a statement that because the manuscript quote “changed hands” several times over the years, no one will face prosecution for its theft.
