Rain hits Tempe on Dec. 25, 2019.

Lorena has been downgraded to a tropical storm from a hurricane, but northwestern Mexico is still preparing for intense weather.

Mexico’s national weather service warns that parts of Sonora will still likely experience heavy rain and strong winds as tropical storm Lorena nears land.

Sonora’s civil protection agency suggested people drive carefully and avoid long car trips.

Classes were suspended in all public schools across Sonora’s 72 municipalities in preparation for the storm, which is expected to touch down in the Mexican state on Saturday.

The U.S. State Department advised U.S. travelers in Sonora, as well as Baja California and Baja California Sur, to take precautions and not enter water in dangerous conditions.
