Mexico says it’s cracking down on fuel smuggling networks

Mexico says it’s cracking down on fuel theft networks and plans to arrest more people who officials say involved in stealing and smuggling oil and gas.

The head of Mexico’s prosecutor’s office said the government will make “many more arrests” of people allegedly involved with smuggling and stealing fuel.

The announcement comes after a recent meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The State Department said after the meeting the two countries would work more closely on a variety of security issues, including preventing fuel theft.

Mexico has already arrested a senior Mexican Navy officer — along with business leaders and government officials — who police say are connected to a massive fuel theft earlier this year.

Sheinbaum defended the Mexican Navy’s investigations process this week after a question at a press conference suggesting the recent death of a member of the Navy in Puerto Peñasco could be related to the crackdown.
