Mexico’s president is meeting with the prime minister of Canada on Thursday to talk about the future of trade between their two countries.

The United States recently opened a public comment period ahead of the scheduled 2026 review of the USMCA, the North American trade agreement that replaced NAFTA.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City. Sheinbaum told reporters Wednesday that both countries want to uphold the agreement that governs trade between their countries and the United States.

“[We’ve talked about] how to strengthen commerce between Mexico and Canada,” Sheinbaum said.

President Donald Trump has said that he wants to use the review period next summer to negotiate the treaty again, six years after his last administration negotiated it originally.

The trade agreement keeps many goods traded between the three countries tariff free.

Since taking office in January, Trump has tied non-trade issues like immigration and drug trafficking to tariffs — a tactic that observers say could show up in next summer’s negotiations.
