White House asks Mexico to crack down on cartels, praises collaboration so far

The White House in October 2018.

The Trump administration called on Mexico to do more over the next year to crack down on the drug trade in a memorandum listing the countries the administration sees as central to narcotics production and distribution.

The White House added Colombia and Bolivia to an existing list of countries the United States says aren’t doing enough to stop the flow and production of illegal drugs.

Mexico wasn’t added to that list but remains on the list of “major drug transit or major illicit drug producing countries.”

The White House said Mexico has worked with the administration to confront drug cartels, including by sending additional Mexican National Guard troops to the border.

But the Trump administration also called on Mexico to do more over the next year, and said it “will expect to see additional, aggressive efforts by Mexico to hold cartel leaders accountable.”
