The U.S. Treasury is sanctioning several individuals and businesses in Mexico it accuses of being part of a faction of the Sinaloa cartel.

The sanctions target a faction of the cartel called Los Mayos, once controlled by the former Sinaloa cartel boss Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who recently pleaded guilty to organized crime charges in a U.S. court.

The Treasury Department accuses the faction of controlling “large swaths” of land in northern Baja California, near the U.S. border.

The new sanctions come as Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence John Hurley visits Mexico to meet with government and business leaders.

The Trump administration’s Treasury Department has sanctioned dozens of Mexican individuals and businesses it suspects of being involved in cartel activity and money laundering. The Trump administration earlier this year designated several Mexico-based drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
