The state of Sonora has experienced years of drought. State capital Hermosillo juggles that reality with a growing population.

The state of Sonora has reported the most heat deaths in all of Mexico this year.

Twenty-five people have died from heat injuries in the state of Sonora this year. That’s more than twice as many in the state of Baja California, which has the second highest number of heat deaths at eight.

Nearly all of those deaths in Sonora were caused by heat stroke. Temperatures have regularly soared past 100 degrees Fahrenheit this summer in the state, and are expected to pass 105 degrees Fahrenheit again in the state capital of Hermosillo later this week.

Experts and advocates in Hermosillo have urged public officials to create more green spaces in the city to mitigate the urban heat island effect and to adapt to a changing climate.
