The number of ICE detainees is on the rise as the Trump administration’s mass deportation campaign continues. And the largest group of immigrants detained by ICE now are those with no criminal record.

ICE data shows there are almost 60,000 people detained by ICE nationwide. An analysis by the research group TRAC shows 43,755 of the 59,762 people detained as of Sept. 21 have never been criminally convicted. That’s 71.5% of the total population, and it comes despite the Trump administration’s assertion that it’s targeting criminals.

The number of immigrants ICE has detained who don't have criminal convictions has risen sharply all year, according to an analysis by researcher Austin Kocher, with some 850 people without records detained in January, compared to more than 16,500 now. Agents with both ICE and Customs and Border Protection make immigration-related arrests.

TRAC’s analysis shows as of September, Arizona has the fifth-highest population of detained immigrants nationwide.
