At a celebration of her first year in office, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico will focus on domestic production, while also seeking a good trade deal with the United States.
Sheinbaum told a crowd of supporters in Mexico City on Sunday that her government would soon present plans to advance several of the country’s technology sectors, including electric vehicle and semiconductor production.
Mexico has been under pressure from the Trump administration to reduce its trade relationship with China.
“I’m confident we will reach a good trade agreement with the United States,” Sheinbaum said at the ceremony on Sunday.
President Donald Trump has tied his administration’s goals of restricting immigration and cracking down on fentanyl smuggling to tariffs on Mexico and Canada. Trump has said wants to renegotiate the trade deal that governs the three countries when it’s up for review in summer 2026.
Sheinbaum’s administration so far has been marked by her ability to negotiate with Trump and stave off the worst of Trump’s tariff threats. Sheinbaum maintains approval ratings surpassing 70%.
