The Tucson City Council is considering a plan to improve safety and security on buses, at stops and at transit centers after calls for improvement from workers citing increasing crime.
Karla Schumann is with the Teamsters Local Union No. 104 and says Sun Tran bus drivers and operators are not in safe situations.
“This is a systemic problem. It’s not a one-stop fix. It has got multiple facets and multiple layers. So we want to be heard, we want to be a part of the conversation, and we want action," Schumann said.
Transit operators note open-air drug use, loitering and limited enforcement.
A Sun Tran passenger survey said a third of riders feel unsafe or very unsafe at bus stops and while using public transit.
