Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says her government will investigate the killing of six civilians by the Mexican military.
Mexico’s army reported this week six people were killed after soldiers on patrol fired on a vehicle in the state of Tamaulipas, which borders Texas. The army did not specify whether those killed were armed.
Sheinbaum says the case is being investigated by the attorney general’s office, as well as the military justice system.
“The use of firearms has to be rational,” Sheinbaum told reporters Wednesday.
According to the Mexican army, the soldiers involved have been relieved of their duties. The killings occurred in the southern part of Tamaulipas. The state has long struggled with violence associated with organized crime.
