Tucson Baseball Team to open season in Hermosillo after U.S. visa issues

The Tucson Baseball Team is starting its first season about 200 miles south of the city that is supposed to be its home base, after the Mexican major league team ran into visa issues.

In the days before the Tucson Baseball Team was set to open their season and become the first Mexican major league team with a homebase in the United States, the team announced it would postpone the series.

But now, the team says it will play this week in Hermosillo, Sonora, instead of Tucson. Their opening series against the Hermosillo Naranjeros will start at the Naranjeros’ home stadium.

The team doesn’t seem to be abandoning hope that it will one day be based in Tucson.

The team was formerly based in Navojoa, Sonora, and announced its move to Tucson earlier this year. The team’s owner says they were informed their B2 and B1 visas were no longer valid because of that relocation.

“Tucson isn’t just a place, it’s family,” the team wrote in a social media post.
