U.S. Highway 66 is popularly known as Route 66 or the Mother Road.

Arizona’s Historic Preservation Office has received $585,000 to help revitalize and preserve parts of Route 66.

According to the preservation agency, the funds from the National Park Service will go towards a program for supporting commercial and civic properties along rural stretches of Route 66 in Arizona.

Eligible properties include motels and trading posts. Grants of up to $100,000 will be provided to help rehab historic properties.

Officials say preservation of historic landmarks and resources is linked to economic growth ahead of the centennial celebration of Route 66 in 2026.
