An Olympic-style velodrome will soon open in Tucson. A velodrome is a steeply banked oval-shaped track for bike racing.
The Pima County Board of Supervisors approved the development of the velodrome. It will be located near the Tucson Speedway and provides an opportunity for cyclists to train.
The structure itself is said to be the first of its kind and is made of aluminum to suit the Tucson climate.
Its design comes from Peter Junek, who specializes in creating such projects. According to its website, the track is 250 meters long and is standard for Olympic and world events.
All riders must start by completing a certification course. The velodrome is expected to open in November.
