The Mexican state of Sonora is seeing a high rate of dengue compared to last year.
Data from the Mexican government shows there have been 1,146 confirmed cases of dengue so far this year in the state of Sonora. That’s significantly more than the total number of confirmed cases for the whole of last year in the state, which was 923. Cases of the mosquito-borne illness tend to spike during and after the rainy season.
The state of Sonora so far has the third-highest number of confirmed dengue cases in all of Mexico, behind the Mexican states of Veracruz and Jalisco. The three states together represent close to half of all confirmed dengue cases in Mexico this year.
While the illness can be deadly, there have been no confirmed deaths from dengue in Sonora in 2025.
