At least 23 people were killed in an explosion at a store in downtown Hermosillo on Saturday.
Multiple children are among the dead, and six people were still hospitalized as of early Sunday morning, according to state officials.
Sonora’s prosecutors’ office says early investigations are following the possibility that the explosion was associated with a transformer located inside the store in Hermosillo’s busy central neighborhood.
Sonora’s governor Alfonso Durazo said in a video on social media that the state government is providing medical, psychological and social support to victims and their families.
“No one will face this pain alone,” Durazo said.
The state prosecutor said Saturday night that there was at that point no evidence to suggest the cause of the explosion was intentional.
Officials were still identifying bodies and notifying families late into Saturday night.
