Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that U.S. troops won’t be entering Mexico — after reports suggesting the Trump administration was preparing a new mission against cartels.

NBC News reported that U.S. officials say the Trump administration has started “detailed planning” for a mission that would send American troops and intelligence officers to Mexico to target cartels.

At her daily morning press conference, Sheinbaum said the United States and Mexico have a security understanding that involves cooperation but not subordination.

“It’s not going to happen,” Sheinbaum said when asked about whether the United States would send troops across the border.

U.S. military personnel acting unilaterally in Mexico would represent a significant ramp up in President Donald Trump’s tactics against drug cartels. Over the past two months, his administration has destroyed several boats far from U.S. territory allegedly carrying drugs, killing dozens.

Sheinbaum has said she does not agree with those attacks.
