All of the victims of a fire that killed 23 people in Hermosillo last weekend have now been identified, as residents call for justice and transparency from investigators.
Authorities on Tuesday said that they had identified the last two victims of Saturday’s explosion at a discount store in the busy city center.
Four people remain hospitalized, Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo said Wednesday. One is an 81-year-old man in critical condition.
Another is a 20-year-old woman who was transferred to Valleywise Health Medical Center in Phoenix.
Six children 10 years old and under are among those killed, including a 10-month-old baby boy.
Durazo said Wednesday that the head of the state’s civil protection service would be removed for the duration of the state Attorney General’s investigation into the causes of the explosion and resulting fire.
Hermosillo Mayor Antonio Astiazarán said Wednesday that the head of the city civil protection service would also be removed so that the organization can keep collaborating on the investigation from “a place of neutrality.”
