Officials in the Mexican state of Sonora are investigating the causes of a fire that killed 23 people last Saturday.
Officials say the Waldo’s in Hermosillo’s busy city center received a negative safety review from the state civil protection service in 2021, and that those documents will be part of the state’s investigation.
Sonoran authorities are investigating the likelihood that the explosion and resulting fire was caused by a transformer located inside the building.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said in her daily morning press conference there should be a deep investigation into what caused the situation.
“From there, it’s necessary to assign responsibility,” Sheinbaum said.
In Hermosillo, citizens are calling for justice, and want public officials held accountable.
