Mexico Secretary of Security Omar García Harfuch announces 13 in the country have been shut down due to alleged money laundering.

The Mexican government is shutting down 13 casinos they suspect of laundering money, including some in the state of Sonora.

After a monthslong investigation, Mexican authorities say they’ve identified a complex scheme to launder money at 13 virtual and physical casinos across several Mexican states.

The Mexican government says it has temporarily blocked activities at those establishments as it continues to investigate in collaboration with the United States and other countries.

Mexico says the suspension of casino activity is to prevent the money from strengthening organized crime groups.

The casinos are accused of sending large amounts of money abroad to conceal the origin of the funds.

Casinos are common in many parts of Mexico, including the state of Sonora, which borders Arizona.
