Grand Canyon's North Rim to close Nov. 14 for the season

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon, which was significantly impacted by one of the largest Arizona wildfires earlier this year, will be closing for the season on Nov. 14.

The North Rim was closed to visitors for much of its 2025 season due to the Dragon Bravo Fire. It did partially reopen in October to low visitation, and stayed open with limited staff through the government shutdown.

Now it’s closing again, this time because of the weather.

Joelle Baird with the Grand Canyon said closing for weather around this time is not unusual.

“And so normally in a given year, Oct. 15 through the end of November is normally open with the caveat that the North Rim may close earlier due to winter storm conditions," Baird said.

Officials say this weekend’s snowy forecast is expected to create unsafe travel and work environments in an area still recovering from post-fire hazards.

“The North Rim doesn't currently, and hasn’t in the past, had the infrastructure and the snow removal equipment to maintain the opening of Highway 67 throughout the winter months," Baird said. "But it is something we were in negotiation with the Arizona Department of Transportation about in the coming years.”

She says the financial impact of the fire is still being determined and certain damaged areas may remain closed next season.
