Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says her government has filed 30 complaints to the United Nations against the United States related to its treatment of migrants.

Sheinbaum told reporters at a press conference this week Mexico doesn’t agree with the treatment of migrants as criminals, as the Trump administration continues immigration raids and deportations.

“We don’t agree with discrimination and treatment that violates human rights,” Sheinbaum said.

She said while her government always seeks a good relationship with the United States, they also have to protect the millions of Mexicans who live there.

Sheinbaum didn’t elaborate on the details of the complaints to the UN, which come as immigrant rights groups accuse immigration officials in the United States of discrimination and not respecting due process.

Migration Policy Institute analyst Ariel Ruiz Soto says Mexico has filed similar complaints under past administrations. This time, Sheinbaum is navigating attempts to protect Mexicans abroad at the same time it negotiates trade and border security issues with the Trump administration.

“President Sheinbaum is working and managing these conversations separately from the ongoing negotiations with the Trump administration,” Ruiz Soto said.
