The Mexican state of Sonora is planning to expand a highway leading to a major tourist destination on the coast.
The project would expand part of the highway between the Sonoran capital Hermosillo and the town of Bahía de Kino on the Gulf of California from two lanes to four.
Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo announced his government plans to invest at least $27 million USD in the highway’s construction.
The plan would expand the two-lane highway to four lanes until about the halfway point between Hermosillo and Bahía de Kino, which is a popular beach destination for Hermosillo residents.
Durazo says his goal is to complete the construction before his term is over at the end of 2027.
It joins a slate of other highway projects touted by the Sonoran government, which they say improve connectivity and tourism in the state.
