Cases of the mosquito-borne illness dengue have spiked this year in the Mexican state of Sonora.

The state of Sonora has recorded more than 2,000 suspected cases of dengue so far this year. That’s more than double the number of suspected cases in the state by the same time last year.

State authorities say higher rainfall this year has created more opportunities for the mosquitos that carry the disease to reproduce. They’re encouraging Sonorans to prevent stagnant water from pooling on their properties.

The state has recorded no fatalities this year from the illness, which is characterized by a fever, muscle and joint pain and a skin rash.

Sonora has reported the second-highest number of cases of the illness of all Mexican states this year.
