The Trump administration is announcing new immigration protocols after a shooting in Washington, D.C., left one member of the National Guard dead and another in critical condition.

The Department of Homeland Security says the man who shot two National Guard members came to the U.S. in 2021 under a program that offered residency to Afghans who worked with the United States before its military withdrawal from the country.

The shooter’s motives are still unknown. Now, the Trump administration says it will halt immigration requests from Afghan nationals pending a review of protocols.

The director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services also said his agency will review green card holders from 19 “countries of concern,” including Afghanistan. There are three Latin American countries on the list: Cuba, Haiti and Venezuela.
