One of the sons of the notorious cartel boss “El Chapo” pleaded guilty in United States court on Monday.
Joaquín Guzmán López — son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán — has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges in a Chicago federal court.
He is the second son of the notorious cartel leader to plead guilty in a U.S. court this year. Their father is serving a life sentence at a maximum security prison in Colorado.
The sons are accused of leading a faction of the Sinaloa cartel, which their father once ran. The Guzmán sons are also accused of orchestrating the smuggling of large quantities of fentanyl into the United States.
Experts have noted plea deals with high-up narcotraffickers could help the United States’ ongoing investigations and prosecutions of cartels, including the Sinaloa cartel.
