The Arizona Department of Transportation is more than halfway done constructing an overpass that will allow wildlife to safely circumvent Interstate 17.

The overpass, on I-17 south of Flagstaff, is scheduled to be completed next fall.

Construction of the $15.8 million project started in May.

A concrete deck has been poured over the 100-foot-wide bridge – which will be covered with soil, grass and plants – to allow wildlife to cross over the interstate.

Construction crews are taking a break for the winter but will resume work next year.

According to ADOT, the area where the overpass is being built accounted for more than half of the crashes involving wildlife in a roughly 40-mile stretch of the interstate from 2018 to 2022.
