On Friday, President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney all attended the draw for the 2026 World Cup, which their three countries are jointly hosting.
The almost awards-show style event to set the bracket for the FIFA men’s world soccer tournament included celebrity appearances as well as the presentation of the first FIFA peace prize to Trump.
The event marks the first time Sheinbaum and Trump have met in person after a series of phone calls over the past year. Analysts say their largely cordial relationship has helped Mexico stave off the worst of Trump’s tariff threats.
On social media after the event, Sheinbaum said the three world leaders “agreed to continue working together on trade issues with our teams.”
