The Pinal County Attorney’s Office announced this week that it’s joining certain violent-crime task forces led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The same deal with the Phoenix Police Department was canceled more than a decade ago.

Under the program known as 287g, local police can help ICE enforce immigration laws. There are several models for jails, warrants and task forces. The latter now involves the Pinal County Attorney’s Office.

Yet it's not Arizona’s first agency to do so. Phoenix police joined 287g under the task force model back in 2008. But the deal was suspended by the Obama administration in June 2012.

The move came after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down most of a state immigration law known as SB 1070.
