The U.S. Treasury Department is putting new sanctions on a Mexican cartel it accuses of fuel theft.
The Treasury Department says the Mexico-based Cartel de Santa Rosa de Lima is primarily involved in stealing fuel and oil. Several cartels in Mexico make money by stealing crude oil from Mexico’s state oil company and then selling it on the black market across the continent.
The Treasury's Office of Foreign Asset Control is sanctioning the alleged leader of the Cartel de Santa Rosa de Lima, who they say runs the criminal organization from prison inside Mexico.
The U.S. says the newly sanctioned cartel is allied with the Sinaloa and Gulf cartels, which the Trump administration this year declared as foreign terrorist organizations.
