New tariffs from Mexico on China and other Asian countries started Thursday, as Mexico faces pressure from the United States.

The new tariffs will affect certain Mexican imports from China and other Asian countries Mexico doesn’t have existing trade agreements with. The import fees — most of which are up to 35% — affect a wide range of goods like cars and car parts, as well as textiles, plastics and steel.

Mexico is under pressure from the United States to reduce its economic relationship with China. The new year could bring a renegotiation of the trade agreement that binds Mexico, Canada and the United States.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has said the tariffs are an effort to boost domestic production of goods in Mexico. Chinese officials have criticized the move as protectionist.
