Officials from Mexico and the United States gathered for the third meeting of a new security group created during a visit to Mexico by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio last year.
The U.S. State Department says the joint security implementation group met in Washington, D.C., where U.S. authorities reiterated their focus on ending illegal drug trafficking.
The most recent meeting comes after the transfer of 37 detained cartel members from Mexico to the United States. Mexico has sent a total of 92 prisoners to the U.S. since the beginning of last year.
The United States is also celebrating the arrest of former Canadian Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding, who was wanted on charges of high-level drug smuggling, as well as orchestrating multiple killings. Officials believe Wedding, who turned himself in to the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, was working under the protection of the Sinaloa cartel.
