A judge has decided there is enough evidence for six individuals and one legal entity to stand trial in the case of a fire at a discount store in Hermosillo that killed two dozen people, including multiple children, in November.
Investigators say the explosion and resulting fire were likely caused by a malfunctioning transmitter located inside the store. In the months since, Hermosillo residents have called for justice and a thorough investigation.
In a statement, the Sonoran Attorney General’s Office says charges include homicide, as well as the use of false documents. The list of defendants is not public, but reportedly includes former public officials responsible for building safety.
The same judge found there wasn’t enough evidence for two additional people to stand trial. The defendants will not be detained as they await trial but are under orders not to leave the state of Sonora.
