'ICE Out' protest closes more than 20 Tucson schools due to staff shortages

Protesters across the U.S. are calling for “no work, no school, no shopping” as part of a nationwide strike on Friday to oppose the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

At least 21 schools within the Tucson Unified School District are closed Friday due to staff shortages amid a nationwide protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The list includes K-8 and high schools across the Tucson area. TUSD leadership says a high number of staff members are using their personal leave at those campuses, and it cannot meet the necessary supervision ratios to ensure student safety.

Food services and transportation routes will still be available.

The absences are part of a nationwide strike that calls for businesses to close and people to stay home from work and school to protest ongoing federal actions in Minneapolis — where some 3,000 federal officers from agencies like the Border Patrol and ICE have conducted roving patrols and sparked protests.

Two U.S. citizens were shot and killed in the city this month by immigration officers. They are among at least eight people who have died in either ICE custody or interactions with Department of Homeland Security officers so far this year.
