The Pinal County Board of Supervisors voted Friday to refer County Attorney Brad Miller to the state Attorney General’s Office for alleged misuse of public money and resources, and failure to retain public records.
The board said Miller hired two employees to work for several weeks without pay, and without the board’s authorization.
“There’s many different departments in the county," said Supervisor Jeff Serdy. "Some of us are elected and we run offices. And I have approval to have a couple of employees. I can’t just hire six more employees and pay them what I want. I would have to get approval from the rest of the board, as we do each of the departments.”
The board approved retroactive payments for the two employees.
Outside counsel confirmed that the board members had a legal duty to report the alleged violations – and could be held liable themselves if they did not.
