The U.S. Treasury is sanctioning a timeshare resort near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, that it accuses of generating money for a major drug cartel.
The sanctions target the Kovay Gardens resort, which U.S. officials say is controlled by the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel.
The Treasury Department alleges the Puerto Vallarta-area resort scams buyers through timeshare resale and re-rent schemes to make money for the drug cartel. They say the scams often take advantage of U.S. citizens.
The sanctions also target five individuals and seven companies allegedly associated with the timeshare scheme at the resort.
The Trump administration designated the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel a foreign terrorist organization, along with several other Mexico-based drug cartels.

The U.S. and Mexico will meet next week to begin talks on the USMCA, the trade agreement that governs much of the economic relationship between the two countries as well as Canada. The USMCA is one of the major reasons that trade with Mexico has remained relatively steady in spite of the broader uncertainty created by President Trump's ill fated tariff policy.
