Gallego asks for set minimum wage, infrastructure investments as USMCA nears renegotiation

Ruben Gallego speaks at Grant Park in Phoenix on Jan. 28, 2023.

Sen. Ruben Gallego says he wants to see an updated trade agreement between the U.S., Mexico and Canada that strengthens U.S. manufacturing and border communities.

Gallego’s request comes as the Trump administration prepares for a mandatory six-year review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement — or the USMCA. The tri-national trade agreement was signed in 2018 and in effect by 2020, and it replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement.

In a letter to U.S. Trade Rep. Jamieson Greer this week, Gallego says the updated agreement should invest in bringing manufacturing back to the U.S., increase wages for American and Mexican workers, and create jobs in border communities.

He’s asking for more funding for the Bureau of International Labor Affairs, a streamlined reporting mechanism for worker complaints, a set minimum wage and other changes.
