Mexico is modernizing its San Luis Río Colorado point of entry, the westernmost border entry point into Arizona from Mexico.

Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo was in San Luis Río Colorado this week for a groundbreaking ceremony to start a project to expand that city’s customs office.

The Mexican city sits about 20 miles south of Yuma, Arizona.

San Luis Río Colorado officials say the around $21 million project will improve mobility, security and commercial exchange between Mexico and the United States.

Last year, the U.S. exported around $800 million worth of goods through that port of entry, according to the University of Arizona. That represents just a fraction of the total amount that crosses from Arizona into Sonora each year.
