Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos lashes out May 8, 2023, at the federal government for failing to deliver on its responsibilities for dealing with the border and immigration. Nanos was speaking at a press conference organized by Gov. Katie Hobbs.
There's growing conversation about whether Sheriff Chris Nanos is up to the task — not just of finding Nancy Guthrie but of serving as sheriff in general. Tucson Agenda reporter Joe Ferguson has been covering the scrutiny.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has come under fire for discrepancies in his work history. On Tuesday, the County Board of Supervisors took steps to compel him to clarify the truth.

The board asked legal counsel to draft language to request reports from Nanos under oath.

After coming out of a three-and-a-half-hour executive session, the board discussed recent allegations that Nanos beat a handcuffed suspect with a flashlight while working in the El Paso Police Department in the 1980s.

County Supervisor Matt Heinz, who has been a critic of Nanos, says he obtained public records that indicate Nanos has misled officials.

“Information with regard to the adverse history was omitted by the sheriff at the time that he applied for a position 42 years ago. The history in question, I'm sure most have seen this, included in the course of five years, eight suspensions," Heinz said.

The legal counsel has to send the drafted requests to the board by April 7. Those will be discussed in executive session.
