DNA testing confirms remains belong to missing son of Madres Buscadoras de Sonora founder

Rocky Point Mass Grave
Madres Buscadoras de Sonora
The Madres Buscadoras de Sonora have been unearthing numerous human remains near Rocky Point in October 2019.

Officials in the state of Sonora, Mexico, confirmed that recently discovered human remains belong to the son of a prominent activist who has been searching for him for years.

Ceci Flores, the founder of the Sonoran search collective Madres Buscadoras de Sonora, has been looking for her son since he went missing in 2019.

Since then, her organization — one of several in Sonora that look for missing people — has discovered scores of human remains in the desert.

Last week, Flores’ group discovered scattered bones that state officials have now confirmed through DNA testing belonged to her son.

They say the remains were discovered on a property once owned by a now-dead individual who is suspected to have kidnapped and killed the victim.

Activists like Flores have long said that Mexican authorities don’t do enough to locate the missing, whose numbers have climbed into the tens of thousands across the country as cartel violence has increased.
