U.S. Customs and Border Protection apprehensions on the Southwest border were up around 25% between February and March, even as migrant encounters at the border remain at historic lows.

CBP reports 8,268 apprehensions in March at the U.S.-Mexico border, up from 6,598 the month before.

That number represents about 1,000 more apprehensions than in March of last year, but remains far below peaks in previous years, which reached well past 100,000 per month.

The number of apprehensions on the Southwest border began to decline significantly in the last months of the Biden administration.

In the Tucson sector, there were around 400 more apprehensions in March than February of this year. CBP reports that sector had the second highest number of apprehensions in March after the Rio Grande Valley sector.
