An advocacy group that tracks global press freedom says Mexico led the list in the region for most journalists killed or disappeared in 2025.

A report from the UK-based advocacy group Article 19 found seven murders and one disappearance of journalists in Mexico last year — the most out of any country in Latin America.

The seven killed include one journalist in the Mexican state of Sonora who the organization says was killed in July. Ángel Sevilla led a digital news outlet in the city of Ciudad Obregon that reported on crime and security there. The outlet has not posted since Sevilla’s death, but still has 125,000 followers on Facebook.

Former Director General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay condemned the killing.

“Journalists play a crucial role in informing the public and guaranteeing the free flow of information,” Azoulay said. “Crimes against journalists must not go unpunished.”

In addition to killings, the group documented more than 50 other physical attacks against the press in Mexico last year.
