Reported State Department review of Mexican consulates in U.S. comes as tensions rise

Mexico’s president says her country’s 53 consulates in the United States are not carrying out political goals on U.S. soil.

That’s after reports that those consulates are under review by the U.S. State Department. The reported review comes as tensions mount between the United States and Mexico.

Over the past few weeks, two U.S. agents died in the state of Chihuahua after a counternarcotics operation, and a U.S. court indicted several Mexican public officials on drug trafficking charges, including members of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s own party.

Sheinbaum says Mexico’s network of consulates in the United States provide important services to Mexican immigrants.

“The idea that Mexican consulates are doing anything political in the United States is absolutely false,” she told reporters Friday.

Sheinbaum said she had not received information from the U.S. State Department about a review of Mexico’s U.S. consulates.

"[The] Department of State is constantly reviewing all aspects of American foreign relations to ensure they are in line with the President's America First foreign policy agenda and advance American interests," Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson said in a statement.

The review was first reported by CBS News on Thursday.
