The Trump administration announced this week it was not ready to renew the trade pact between the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The USMCA — the trade deal the first Trump administration signed to replace NAFTA — stays in effect for now, but goes into a period of likely prolonged negotiations.
In a statement, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said his office wants to address what the administration sees as shortcomings with the treaty, along with trade deficits with Mexico and Canada.
Mexico’s economy minister, Marcelo Ebrard, said at a press conference Wednesday after the United States’ announcement that Mexico plans to use the talks to try to reduce or eliminate Trump administration tariffs on certain Mexican goods, including steel and aluminum.
“I haven’t identified any differences between the United States, Mexico and Canada that we can’t resolve,” Ebrard said.
Mexico and the United States are expected to meet to discuss the trade agreement the week of July 20.
The North American trade deal is important to Mexico’s export-heavy economy, which sends billions of dollars of goods a year to the United States. Much of those exports are tariff-free under USMCA.
