Mexico has arrested the former governor of the Mexican state of Baja California for his alleged role in a fuel smuggling operation.
Former Baja California Gov. Ernesto Ruffo was arrested by federal authorities in Mexico, after what the country’s justice department called a highly technical and lengthy investigation.
Mexico says their investigation found that smugglers mislabel fuel imports from the United States to avoid import taxes from Mexico.
“This criminal behavior directly affects the country’s economy, while at the same time generating income for criminal organizations,” Mexican Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos said in a video statement Thursday.
Mexico’s Department of Justice says a company founded by the ex governor was involved in the large-scale fuel smuggling scheme.
