Mexican authorities seized more than 3 tons of methamphetamine bound for Tijuana from a vehicle in the state of Sonora, south of Arizona.
Mexican authorities say the methamphetamine was seized from a tractor trailer, where it was hidden in sacks of livestock feed.
The seizure occurred on the highway between the Sonoyta-Lukeville border crossing and the beach city of Puerto Peñasco, a popular route for Arizona tourists. Officials say the tractor trailer was headed to Tijuana.
The production and smuggling of synthetic drugs like methamphetamine are an important revenue stream for Mexico’s drug cartels.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said in its 2024 National Drug Threat Assessment that nearly all of the methamphetamine sold in the United States today is manufactured in Mexico, and it is “purer and more potent” than in the past.
