U.S., Mexico wrap up third round of USMCA talks as Trump's new tariffs take effect

Mexico and the United States have wrapped up another round of trade talks, as the Trump administration puts a new slate of tariffs on more than 60 countries.

Those go into effect just as the tariffs deemed unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year expire.

Mexico says it remains with a 10% tariff on exports to the United States that fall outside of the USMCA trade deal between the United States, Mexico and Canada.

That deal, which keeps many of the goods traded between the three countries tariff-free, is currently under review. Mexico and the United States this week completed a third round of talks, which included a meeting between U.S. Trade Rep. Jamieson Greer and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Sheinbaum told reporters at a Friday press conference that she and Greer had a “very good meeting” this week.

The two countries continue to discuss topics including “rules of origin” for the automotive sector, the metric that gauges how much of a product came from Mexico or the United States — rather than a third country, like China, Sheinbaum said.

The United States is taking a new approach when it comes to trade, Sheinbaum said Friday of President Donald Trump’s protectionist policies.

“We’re working with the United States to come to a long term agreement in this new vision that the United States has,” Sheinbaum said.

A fourth round of talks between the United States and Mexico in Washington, D.C., are set for September.
