More police officers will staff bus stops in Tucson for start of school

After recent violent incidents on Sun Tran buses, Tucson is stationing more police officers and outreach officials at stops from Aug. 5 to 14.

Assistant City Manager Liz Morales says officials from different city departments will man about 60 transit stops across Tucson Unified, Amphitheater, Sunnyside and Flowing Wells school districts. It’s the first time Tucson is trying this approach.

Morales says Mayor Regina Romero and Vice Mayor Lane Santa Cruz requested the program to “provide clear communications with students and families regarding transit safety resources and expectations for respectful rider behavior, and how to report safety concerns.”
